SG20

The SG20 is a versatile, slimline steel and glass door, with matching glazed screens and windows. When used as main entrance doors to public and commercial buildings, the SG20's welded steel construction is capable of withstanding very heavy use over many years. When used internally, the fire rated SG20 is often used in corridors, stairs or lift lobbys in multistory buildings.

Fire Rating

Our SG20 doorsets have been tested to BS 476 or BS EN 1634 and have achieved integrity ratings from 30/0 to 180/0, and integrity and insulation ratings from 30/30 to 90/90.
Size limitations do apply, so please contact us for further advice to achieve your required specification.

Uses

As the SG20 is versatile, and designed and manufactured to order, the applications are many and include:

  • Hotels
  • Offices
  • Restaurants
  • Reception areas
  • Apartments

Locks
Locks for fire rated doors

As a general rule to achieve the fire rating, single action (rebated) doors must have a mortice lock and latch with additional top locking point and a drop seal. Therefore they require lever handles or activated pull handles that retract the latch.

Double action doors have an intumescent layer that cannot be milled out for locks/latches. These generally have surface mounted pull handles.

One exception to this is a single action door available with plain meeting stiles. This must have an anti finger trap stile which means no latch can be used.

Door Closers

Overhead closers are versatile and useful. We strongly recommend using a door closer on all glass doors to prevent them from slamming. All will close the door, limit further access or maintain internal environments. Depending on the model chosen, they can also:

  • Control the opening and closing speed – useful in windy situations.
  • Restrict the door opening angle, to prevent damage to doors and the reveal corners.
  • Hold a door open - useful when carrying goods through.
  • Delay closing – helpful for parents with buggies or people with limited mobility.
  • Fire rated doors must be fitted with a self closing device so that the doorset will resist the spread of fire. If these doors need to be held open in normal use, we can fit electro-hydraulic closers linked to the building’s fire alarm system.

Surface mounted closers are available in several finishes, to complement the chosen colour scheme.

Powered Operators

Powered operators are often fitted to main entrance doors to allow unimpeded entry and exit of pedestrians from a building. They can also be useful when:

  • Carrying goods through
  • Pushing trolleys through
  • Driving vehicles through
  • Linked to access control systems
Inward Opening Doors

Closers are usually mounted on the door leaf. On inward opening doors this can result in the closer body fouling the wall so you may need to allow extra clearance or a recess cut into the wall.

U Values

The U Values for the SG20 glass door have been calculated to EN 673, EN ISO 10077-1 and EN ISO 10077-2.

A standard SG20 door is 5.6 W/(m²K). The rest of the range is between 2.4 W/(m²K) and 8.3 W/(m²K). Please contact us for more details.

Handles

The SG20 glass doorset is able to be fitted with handles in many different sizes, finishes and designs. If you cannot see what you want here, we would be pleased to offer alternatives.

Handles for the SG20 glass door fall into two main groups depending on the type of lock fitted:

Pull handles, for single or double action doors without latched mortice locks.
Lever handles or activated pull handles, for single action doors with latched mortice locks.
Standard pull handles are always cranked or angled to avoid trapping the hands against the frame of a single door, or the other leaf of a double glass door. Straight pull handles do not provide enough safe clearance for the hands and we do not recommend their use. It is customary to fit pull handles in pairs, even when a door is single action.

Lever handles are used for locks with latches, on single action glass doors.

Activated pull handles may be used to operate a mortice lock on a single action door where the use of a lever handle is considered undesirable, for example in a busy corridor. Hewi activated handles work by converting a push / pull motion into the rotary motion necessary to turn a lock's spindle and withdraw its latch.

SG20 Glass

The SG20 door is glazed according to its required function and usage. The normal considerations would include: impact safety, fire rating, thermal insulation, light and heat transmission, sound reduction. Glazing is available in single panes or double glazed units, which may be toughened, laminated, clear, obscure, textured or have various high performance coatings.

Manifestation is offered for company logos, decorative effects and Part M compliance.

In general, we are able to fit most types of glass to the SG20, up to a maximum thickness of 42mm depending on the frame profile used. Overall size limitations may apply, particularly for fire rated glass, or because of the glass manufacturer's production capabilities.

Fire rated glasses have particular tested size and area limitations. In general, 1500mm wide x 2500mm high, or perhaps 3.5m², is often the maximum allowable size, but contact us for details of specific fire ratings with permissible glass types and frame combinations.

SG20 Profiles

SG20 glass doors are constructed with steel profile systems, which are designed to fulfil differing performance requirements. Within each system, a variety of profile sections and finishes are available.

Most systems are available in several finishes including: mirror polished and brushed stainless steel, or polyester powder coated bright or galvanised steel to any BS or RAL colour.

SG20 glass door profile systems are carefully chosen by us according to the expected usage requirements of the doorset. For example, a glass doorset required to have an EI90 fire rating would probably be constructed with the Fuego Light system, while a double action door in a busy corridor would be constructed using Norm profiles.

If a standard system will not meet a particular requirement, we can manufacture custom profiles.

Configurations

Glass doorsets may be single action, double action, or sliding; with single or double doors, with glazed side panels or over panels.
